NURS FPX4010 Collaboration and leadership
Inter-professional collaboration is an important determinant of organizational success as implied in NURS FPX4010 Collaboration and leadership . Inter-professional collaboration strengthens the creation of an organizational culture that promotes excellence in service provision. The provision of care in inter-professional teams has been shown to result in outcomes that include improved performance, competitiveness, quality and patient and provider satisfaction with care. Therefore, this paper on NURS FPX4010 Collaboration and leadership is a reflection of my experience with inter-professional teams.
Reflection of an Inter-Disciplinary Collaboration
One of the inter-disciplinary collaborations that I participated is the implementation of an electronic health records system in our organization. The project entailed assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of the system in facilitating the organizational success. The process involved inputs from different representatives of the healthcare providers including nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians. The project was successful due to a number of reasons. Firstly, the team leaders encouraged open communication. The team members had the freedom to express their views and concerns about the different elements of the project. The project was also successful due to the optimum participation of the stakeholders. The team members played an active role in all the project activities (Hassmiller & Pulcini, 2020). One area that was unsuccessful in the project is the efficient use of the allocated resources. There was a mismatch between the resource needs of the project and the allocated resources.
Effects of Poor Collaboration
Poor collaboration can lead to inefficient management of financial and human resources. Firstly, it results in uncoordinated activities of the project, which contributes to wastage of financial resources, time and human efforts. Poor collaboration also leads to low adoption of the proposed change in the organization. The adopters resist the change due to lack of their participation and knowledge about the significance of the project. Poor collaboration also leads to de-motivated human workforce. The staffs lack the morale that is needed for future projects that aim at improving performance (Courtenay & Castro-Sánchez, 2020). Therefore, any future intervention that aims at strengthening organizational success fails leading to poor management of finance and human resources.
Leadership Strategies
Effective leadership is important to improve the ability of inter-disciplinary teams to achieve its goals. One of the leadership strategies that are important in enabling inter-disciplinary teams to achieve their goals is open communication. Open communication among the inter-disciplinary team members is important because the needs and experiences of the members can be expressed and addressed for the overall success of the team. Open communication also fosters trust and honesty among the team members. The other leadership strategy is role modelling. The leaders of the inter-disciplinary teams should demonstrate the desired behaviors among their members. Through it, the members will embrace these behaviors, hence, the desired success. The other strategy is encouraging active participation of the team members (Alvinius, 2017). Active participation promotes the ownership and empowerment of the members of the inter-professional teams.
Inter-Disciplinary Strategies
One of the best-practice inter-disciplinary strategies that can help a team to achieve its goals and work together is acknowledging and rewarding performance. The team members should be acknowledged and rewarded for their performance and contribution to the success of the assigned projects. Rewarding performance promotes innovation and motivation among the team members. The other strategy is providing regular and consistent feedback. The inter-disciplinary team members should be made aware of their small successes, challenges and strategies that can be embraced for further achievements (Sherman, 2019). Regular and consistent feedback strengthens the adoption of behaviors that promote excellence.
Conclusion
Overall, inter-disciplinary collaboration is important for the realization of the desired organizational goals. Effective inter-disciplinary collaboration depends largely on the nature of leadership styles, strategies and collaboration utilized by the involved stakeholders. Health organizations should prioritize the adoption of best leadership and inter-disciplinary strategies for the success of their projects. Most importantly, the team members should be actively involved to encourage ownership of the project and their empowerment.
