Answer for NRS 465 Discuss two barriers that might hold nursing practice from achieving this goal and suggest ways in which the identified barriers may be addressed
Topic 1 DQ 1
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a core component of effective care delivery as it integrates the provider’s perspective and experience as well as patient considerations. While the National Academy of Medicine championed that 90% of clinical decisions should be founded on evidence-based approaches by 2020, this goal has not been attained because of the barriers holding back nurses from implementing it. These barriers include limited support from the management and organizational leaders, lack of knowledge and skills, time constraints, and limited resources. For instance, effective implementation of evidence-based practice requires support from the organizational leaders and management. However, as McArthur et al. (2021) note, healthcare providers lack support from their organizational leaders and managers to implement such interventions in their clinical practice settings. Through a qualitative evidence synthesis article, McArthur et al. (2021) observe that lack of teamwork and organizational support hamper the implementation of EBP to improve patient outcomes in long-term care facilities. Additionally, Dagne et al. (2021) observe that limited support hinders the effective implementation of current evidence in clinical decision-making and practice. As such, nurses want to implement EBP-centered decisions but lack support and resources from organizations and time.
Addressing these barriers entails ensuring that nurses and other providers in such settings have sufficient support from the organization through effective resource allocation and time to implement such decisions. Further, teamwork and improving inter-professional collaboration will ensure that all providers in healthcare settings make evidence-based practice decisions when offering patient care for better outcomes. Healthcare organizations should offer enough time and resources for nurses to implement EBP and attain expected quality care for better outcomes.
