Identifying and acknowledging short-term wins during periods of change is not just important, it’s crucial. These wins, which are like stepping stones, not only boost the morale and motivation of the stakeholders and change agents but also provide a sense of accomplishment and progress. They keep the momentum going, acting as building blocks leading to the success of the long-term goal. As the organization achieve short-term wins, stakeholders, who play a pivotal role in this process, learn and trust more about the organization and they too achieve a short-term win. As people progress along a learning curve for any given task, organizations follow the same (Gottfredson, et. al., 2008).
Short-term wins reinforce the vision that had been established for the change, and when stakeholders can see that there is some success being accomplished, their support of the change vision is further reinforced. For change agents, creating those wins also provided the guiding coalition with concrete feedback about the validity of their vision (Kotter, 1996). The success of short-term wins not only boosts morale and motivation but also helps stakeholders to better understand and align with the change objectives, making the change process more effective and successful.
When success is demonstrated, it significantly diminishes resistance that may have been present. Change agents put in considerable effort to effect meaningful change, and attaining short-term results through milestones provides them with tangible progress while working towards the ultimate victories (Kotter, 1996). Short-term wins not only reinforce stakeholder support and trust in the change, but also serve as a potent tool in mitigating resistance, thereby facilitating a smoother and more effective change process..
Short-term wins not only boost morale, reinforce the vision, and provide feedback, but also build credibility and reduce resistance from stakeholders. Seeking short-term wins is a strategic move for change agents to drive success and ensure that the change initiative stays on target while achieving its objectives.
In reality, implementing major change takes time. You and your guiding coalition use short-term wins to eliminate any organizational discouragement with the slow pace of implement major organizational changes (Tanner, 2023).
