The clinical site where I will be undertaking my practicum is a psychiatric hospital. The hospital provides both in-patient and outpatient psychiatric services. The hospital also provides medical and surgical care and specialized services to its clients. The site has specialists in psychiatry that provide care to the different clients that are seen in the facility. My preceptors during the practicum experience will comprise psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.
The preceptors have extensive experience in the management of psychiatric conditions. They also have extensive experience with implementing change initiatives to address the care needs of psychiatric patients. As a result, the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners will assist me in the provision of evidence-based care to the patients seen in the facility. They will also guide me in selecting the best treatments for the patients and evaluating their effectiveness. The preceptors will also guide me in developing and implementing the change project to improve outcomes.
My specialty is psychiatry. I am training to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). PMHNPs have advanced knowledge and skills in the management of mental health problems. They are allowed to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate the adopted treatments. They also have advanced knowledge and skills in the translation of evidence in practice. The training ensures that psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners promote optimum outcomes in the care of psychiatric patients (Balestra, 2019; Delaney &Vanderhoef, 2019).
